Can Beginners Freedive in Silfra? Everything You Need to Know
Category: Beginner Guides
The word freediving can sound intimidating. But the reality of freediving in Silfra is very different — and very accessible. The honest answer to whether beginners can freedive in Silfra is: yes, absolutely.
What Does Freediving in Silfra Actually Involve?
On our Silfra freedive tours, freediving simply means diving beneath the surface on a breath hold — no scuba equipment, no air tank. You float on the surface, take a breath, and duck-dive down to explore the fissure below. The depth you go to is entirely up to you and your comfort level. Our guides adjust everything to suit whoever is in the water that day.
What Experience Do I Need?
None. You do not need any prior freediving experience, diving certification, or special training. The only requirements are that you can swim and are in reasonable health. Our guides give a full briefing before entering the water covering basic technique, safety rules and what to expect.
What Makes It Accessible for Beginners?
- Silfra is a calm, still freshwater fissure — no currents, no waves
- Visibility up to 100 metres — you can always see exactly where you are
- Our guides are in the water with you throughout the entire dive
- Groups are kept small so you get personal attention
- You go at your own pace — no pressure to dive deeper than you are comfortable
- The specialist freediving wetsuit makes the experience comfortable even in cold water
What if I Am Nervous?
Completely normal. Most first-timers are a little nervous before getting in. Our guides are experienced at working with nervous guests. The briefing is thorough, the entry into the water is gradual, and you will never be asked to do anything you are not comfortable with. The moment most guests put their face in the water and see the clarity and beauty of Silfra, the nerves disappear entirely.
The Bottom Line
Freediving in Silfra is one of the most accessible adventure experiences in Iceland. You do not need to be a strong swimmer, an experienced diver, or particularly fit. You just need to show up with an open mind and let your guide take care of the rest.
