Silfra Freedive – Night Tour

Silfra Freedive Night Tour — Discover Silfra After Dark

There are very few places on earth where you can freedive beneath a sky full of stars, and Silfra is one of them. Our Silfra Freedive Night Tour takes you into the glacial fissure after dark for an experience that is genuinely unlike anything else — the crystal-clear water glows in the beam of your torch, the silence is absolute, and the sense of otherworldly solitude is unforgettable.

Silfra at night has a completely different atmosphere to the daytime. With no other tourists around, your group has the fissure entirely to yourselves. The famous visibility — up to 100 metres — takes on a new dimension after dark, as your torchlight illuminates the blues and greens of the Silfra Cathedral in ways that daylight simply cannot replicate.

Summer nights vs winter nights — two completely different experiences

Iceland’s dramatic seasons mean that a night dive in summer and a night dive in winter are worlds apart, and both are spectacular in their own way.

In summer, Iceland’s famous midnight sun means you may be diving in soft golden light even at 11pm — the sky never fully darkens, casting a warm ethereal glow across the water and the surrounding lava fields of Þingvellir. It is serene, dreamlike and uniquely Icelandic.

In winter it is a completely different story. Darkness falls early and the sky above Þingvellir is one of the darkest in Iceland — making it one of the best locations in the country to see the Northern Lights. Imagine freediving in 100-metre visibility glacial water while the aurora dances overhead. On clear winter nights this is a very real possibility and something our guests talk about for years afterwards. The cold is more intense in winter but our 7mm open-cell wetsuits handle it well, and the reward is an atmosphere that is nothing short of magical.

Whichever season you choose, a night dive at Silfra is an experience that stays with you for life.
