Silfra by Night: Freediving Under the Stars in Iceland
Silfra during the day is one thing. Silfra after dark, lit only by dive torches, is a genuinely different experience — quieter, stranger, and completely dependent on the time of year you visit.
Two very different versions of "night"
In summer, Iceland's midnight sun means a "night" dive still happens in real daylight — the sky simply doesn't get dark. It's the same clear water and the same fissure, just at a quieter hour with fewer people around.
In winter, it's the real thing: genuine darkness, dive torches cutting through the water, and — with some luck and clear skies — the northern lights visible above the surface as you finish. Nothing is guaranteed with aurora activity, but a winter night dive at Silfra is about as close as freediving gets to something otherworldly.
What to expect
The tour runs the same way as a daytime Silfra Freedive — full wetsuit, hood, gloves, boots, long fins, and weight belt, guided by a certified instructor — with a dive torch added for the winter, dark-water version. Availability is seasonal, so check current dates on the tour page.
