Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need experience to freedive or snorkel Silfra?
No certification is needed for Silfra Freedive, Snorkel, or Foodhunt tours — just the ability to swim. Freedive Foodhunt is the one exception, since it does require prior freediving experience.
What's the minimum age?
12 years old for both freedive and snorkel tours, group or private. There is no upper age limit, but guests aged 60 or older need medical clearance from a doctor before joining. Please fill out our online medical statement in advance so we can sort it out with you.
What's included in the tour?
A full wetsuit, hood, gloves, boots, mask, snorkel, and fins. Freedive tours also include long freedive fins and a weight belt; snorkel tours use short fins and no weight belt. Just bring a swimsuit and towel to wear underneath — or rent/buy one from us.
Do I need to give my height, weight, or shoe size in advance?
No — for our wetsuit tours we fit you with the right gear on site. (The exception is the drysuit option on the Private Snorkel tour, which does ask for those measurements in advance so the suit fits properly.)
Can I bring my own wetsuit?
Yes — if you'd rather use your own, it needs to be at least 5mm thick. Anything thinner and we'll ask you to use ours instead.
How long is the tour, and how long are we actually in the water?
Freedive and snorkel tours run about 2.5 hours total, with roughly 45 minutes of that in the water. Foodhunt runs approximately 3 hours, varying with weather and pace.
How big are the groups?
Groups are capped at 6 people per guide — that's a Þingvellir National Park rule, not ours.
Where do we meet?
At the Silfra car park in Þingvellir National Park. Our team will be there 15 minutes before your tour time.
What's your cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 2 days before your tour. 50% refund for cancellations 1–2 days out. No refund inside 24 hours.
Is Silfra Night dark?
It depends on the season. Summer night dives happen during the midnight sun, so it's still bright. Winter night dives are genuinely dark, lit by torches, with the northern lights sometimes visible above the surface as you finish.
Do you offer scuba diving?
Not directly through Freedive Iceland — our sister company Dive Iceland handles all PADI scuba tours, courses, and gear rental.
Can you build a custom or multi-day trip?
